What is the PMP Certification?

Organizations are giving great importance to project management recently, because of increasing competition, better quality requirements, and deadlines to achieve targets. The PMP certification has become an industry standard, and it is the most sought-after certification in project management. A PMP title on your resume will greatly increase the visibility of your resume in job portals and makes you a more appealing job candidate. This certification is valid across all industries and recognized throughout the world. It shows that you have the experience, education, and competency to successfully lead and direct projects.

What is the PMP Examination Structure?

The PMP exam is composed of 200 multiple choice questions. Out of these 200 questions, 25 questions are pre-test; these marks do not affect your score. These pre-test questions will be placed randomly throughout the exam questions, and you will not be able to differentiate them from other scoreable questions. Therefore, it is of your benefit to assuming that all 200 questions are scoreable. In this exam, you must attempt all questions as there is no negative marking. The duration of the exam is four hours. There is no scheduled break; however, this does not mean that you cannot take a break. You can take a break during the exam, but mind you, the clock will continue to count down.

Is the PMBOK Guide Enough to Pass the PMP Certification Exam?

The PMBOK Guide is a must-read book for the PMP certification exam. There is no doubt that you must read the PMBOK Guide several times before going to the PMP certification exam since the PMBOK guide is the basis for the PMP certification exam. However, you also need to refer to some other PMP exam preparation books to pass the exam, because the PMBOK Guide does not answer all questions asked in the test; e.g., situation-based questions. You have to study some good reference books and practice the exam questions to understand the project management concepts and various tools and techniques.

How Much Time Should I Spend Preparing for the PMP Certification Exam?

Depending on your experience, effort wise it needs 120 to 160 hours. Duration wise we suggest you take at least two to three months for your PMP exam preparation. Reading the material is not sufficient, but you also need to digest the information well to interpret it to answer the practical questions. We saw the pattern where reading couple of hours a day helped students over cramming the material on a weekend.
